Hydrate and bring your workout to a whole new level!

In my eyes water is the number one thing that gets me through a workout, if I didn’t have it before and during my workout I wouldn’t even attempt it! It would be like trying to drive my car without petrol, I just wouldn’t get anywhere! But a lot of people don’t realise how important it really is! Have you ever had a session where you think “I just can’t go on anymore and I have only just done my warm up, HELP!” Chances are is you are just dehydrated!

Water is an essential nutrient and is so important for physical performance, resistance to injury and maintenance of normal body temperature. Hydrating during your workouts is an essential aid to improve your physical performance and weight loss. Drinking nothing during training is a massive mistake, just as bad as not eating properly prior to your workout. Your workout hydration can take your workout to a whole new level.

Not only is water so important for optimum training but it’s essential for everyday function of your body and it is great for weight loss, cellulite and anti-ageing! (I am currently downing pints of water as I am writing this 😀 ) Also, sometimes when you feel hungry its actually dehydration. The next time you feel hungry even though you shouldn’t be, then please try and have a glass of water first and see if the hunger passes, if it does then you know you were just dehydrated!

Some people don’t even know they are dehydrated; there are all sorts of Symptoms of dehydration which include:

  • Dry mouth, dry skin
  • Sleepiness or fatigue
  • Extreme thirst
  • Headache
  • Confusion, Feeling dizzy or lightheaded
  • Toilet issues such as finding it hard to urinate, or urine that is darker and/ or smellier than usual

My top tips for staying hydrated:

  • Buy a filtered water bottle and some sticky plain tabs, each time you fill the water bottle up, mark the tab with a tally. At the end of the day see how many times you have filled the bottle up. You will be surprised how little you do drink.
  • Consume 1 glass of alcohol to 1 glass of water. (You will also feel less hung-over) BONUS!
  • Add a slice of lemon or lime to your drink for an added cleansing benefit.
  • If you’re going to be exercising, make sure you drink water before, during and after your workout.
  • The Institute of Medicine determined that an adequate intake (AI) for men is roughly 3 liters (about 13 cups) of total drinks per day. The AI for women is 2.2 liters (about 9 cups) of total per day.

Remember that you only have ONE body and ONE chance to look after it. We sometimes forget that our bodies need love and care and it will breakdown if it is neglected. If your job, home life or whatever it may be is the reason you don’t exercise, don’t drink enough water, and you eat rubbish. Then ask yourself how you will feel if you do get seriously ill? Will that job or reason help you then? No, it probably won’t and you won’t be able to do anything about it. So act now, give your body the love and care it needs and try and live a positive healthy life.
